A Brief History of Capoeira

Capoeira is a system of disciplined movements in which two players face each other in what can be viewed as a game, a fight, or a dance. The origins of Capoeira are unclear, but its roots can be traced back to the time of slavery in Brazil, which took place from 1535 to 1885. It is commonly believed that a form of Capoeira arrived in Brazil with Africans and was further developed by their descendents, both on the plantations and in the “quilombos” or run-away slave communities that flourished in the forests for several centuries. It is probable that the need to mask the combative nature of Capoeira resulted in movements that make it appear to be a dance.

The practice of Capoeira was forbidden during slavery times and was also made illegal after Brazil became a republic. It began to be practiced openly in the 1930s, with the opening of the first academy for the teaching of Capoeira. Today, Capoeira continues to evolve, as new movements and songs are continually added. It has become a national sport of Brazil and is practiced in all kinds of settings.

Capoeira is generally classified as a martial art, but it is much more than that. It combines elements of dance, acrobatics and theater with high-level fitness and cardiovascular training. It encompasses a complete philosophy, which can be applied to the demands of everyday life.
